Why I Love Both Rugby Union and League

What are your favorite sports to watch and play?

Liking both Rugby Union and League might raise a few eyebrows, as most fans spend a lot of time arguing over which sport is better, but I like them both. They each have their own pros and cons, and I enjoy watching and playing them for different reasons.

Rugby Union: A Game of Variety and Prestige

Rugby Union is the code that I grew up with and learned to play at school and club. My position was mostly lock, but sometimes blindside and number 8. I preferred the back row, but I kept getting put back into lock because I am 6ft 5. Rugby Union has more variety in gameplay and tactics, as there are more phases, set pieces, and skills involved. It also has more international competitions and prestige, such as the Six Nations, the Rugby Championship, and the Rugby World Cup. In rugby union, I follow Ulster and Ireland, and I always cheer for them when they play.

Rugby League: A Game of Speed and Entertainment

Rugby League is the code that I discovered in 2020 during COVID, when there was no other rugby on TV and then NRL was the first game back. I never played league, but I fell in love with it then. Rugby League is faster and more continuous than union, as there are fewer stoppages and interruptions. It also has more game time and scoring opportunities, as there are only six tackles per possession and more space on the field. It is more accessible and entertaining for casual fans, as the rules are simpler and the action is more intense. In rugby league, I mainly watch the Australian NRL, but I have no main team, just watch whatever is on.

Conclusion

I hope this blog post has given you some insight into why I love both rugby union and league, and how they are different and similar. I think both sports have their merits and challenges, and I respect the players and fans of both codes. I don’t think there is a definitive answer to which sport is better, as it depends on your personal preference and experience. I just enjoy watching and playing both, and I hope you do too.
